Lazada Philippines Website
Lazada Philippines Website

I am not an avid fan of online resellers so I don’t usually make transactions with e-commerce sites. However, due to the massive convenience that an online store gives, its very hard for me to ignore them for a very long time. So after caving in to my own self, I decided to try and transact with an online store – Lazada Philippines.

Dollarbird: A Simple and Direct to the Point Expense Management App

In this post I will review Dollarbird (free version) app found in Google Playstore.

Dollarbird is an expense management app that gives its user a simple and a direct to the point user interface. It focuses on what is really important and what the user really needs – quick expense input, tagging and colorful charts.

In a nutshell, Dollarbird features:

  • Simple and easy to use user interface
  • PIN protection
  • Calendar overview of expenses
  • Total expense and running balance overview
  • Quick expense addition and tagging
  • Daily reminder
  • Data export
  • Homescreen widget (contains daily summary and quick add button)

Not all features are available to free users though. Some of which can be only used if you subscribe for the app:

  • Multiple calendars
  • Sync & backup calendar
  • Pro dashboard
  • Monthly budgets
  • Additional icons

User Interface

The user interface of Dollarbird features a colorful, easy to use and no-fuss direct to the point interface flow. It utilizes a blue and white color design and uses colored and customizable expense icons for your expense / income categories. Graphs are also provided by the app which can be used in order to get an overview of the running expense and net balance. In addition, swipe gestures are also supported in deleting expense or income entries.

Pros:

  • Clean and and very straightforward application interface.
  • Graphs provide an overview of the movement of the expenses.

Cons:

  • Interface will not work on people that expects a full blown financial management app.

Pin Protection

Dollarbird also features a four (4) character PIN protection for the app. The PIN prompt will appear every time the user opens the app. However, the PIN protection does protect accidental addition of expenses through the quick add widget.

Pros:

  • Protection from unwanted disclosure of expenses.

Cons:

  • Quick add widget does not support PIN protection.

Calendar Overview of Expenses

One thing that I immediately noticed with Dollarbird is that it has a capability to give you a daily overview of your expenses for the current month and the net balance of your money. This was a feature that separated Dollarbird from other expense management apps that I have tried before (Toshl and Expense Manager by Bishinews) since they only provide you a summary of your total expenses.

Pros:

  • Glance-able monthly expense information.

Cons:

  • No separation of daily information on the total income earned and the total expenses incurred.

Total Expense and Running Balance Overview

Just like any other expense management app, Dollarbird also supports summary of the total expenses and the running balance of your money. Summary of the total expenses incurred and the running balance of your money can then be tapped to open an itemized and a more detailed view of your expenses.

Pros:

  • A summary page helps in giving you a quick overview of your balances.

Cons:

  • Income page does not give you the detailed income items.

Quick Expense Addition and Tagging

Easy expense addition and tagging is also one of my favorite feature baked into Dollarbird. It gives the users the capability to add expenses or income by using downward swipe gesture (on the calendar overview) and tag it accordingly with ease. Tag icon and color customization can also be made which will help users in immediately identifying the appropriate tag for the current expense (though personally the default built-in tags works for me).

Pros:

  • Quick and easy expense addition and tagging.
  • Swipe gesture really helps specially if you’re using the app on a phone.

Cons:

  • Missing built-in calculator and currency converter app functionality.

Daily Reminder, Data Export, Widget (contains daily summary and quick add button)

In addition to the above listed features, Dollarbird also have the capability to remind you to enter your expenses at a specified time, export expense and income details to a Comma Separated Value (CSV) format, and a quick add functionality and daily expense summary right on your phone’s homescreen.

Pros:

  • Expense taking will be easier to remember with the daily reminder functionality.
  • Full expense backup can be exported.
  • Quick expense add from homescreen and daily balance functionality is a life saver.

Cons:

  • Daily reminder does not have a functionality to remind you in multiple intervals within a day.
  • No expense backup import functionality.

Wrap Up

Dollarbird is a good expense manager for those who are willing to go to simple expense tracking and management. It gives you the high level overview of your balances, a daily computation of your running expenses and graphs for visualization.

Pros:

  • Clean and and very straightforward application interface.
  • Graphs provide an overview of expenses.
  • Glance-able monthly expense information.
  • Protection from unwanted disclosure of expenses via PIN.
  • A summary page for a quick overview of your balances.
  • Quick and easy expense addition and tagging.
  • Swipe gestures
  • Expense taking will be easier to remember with daily reminder functionality.
  • Full expense backup can be exported.
  • Quick expense add from homescreen and daily balance functionality is a life saver.

Cons:

  • Interface will not work on people that expects a full blown financial management app.
  • Quick add widget does not support PIN protection.
  • No separation of daily information on the total income earned and the total expenses incurred.
  • Income page does not give you the detailed income items.
  • Missing built-in calculator and currency converter app functionality.
  • Daily reminder can’t remind you in multiple intervals in a day.
  • No expense backup import functionality.
